Станіслав Улям – львів’янин, який став одним із творців термоядерної бомби США.
Станіслав Улям своїми обчисленнями вирішив проблему, з якою не могли впоратися найкращі фізики ХХ століття. Його рішення дозволило створити найпотужнішу зброю того часу.
У 12 років Станіслав Улям пробирався в лекційні зали університету і слухав про теорію відносності. Коли ж отримав диплом Львівської політехніки, чутки про нього швидко ширилися серед наукової еліти.
У той час він досліджував, як хімічні процеси можна описувати методами статистичної фізики. Хто б міг подумати, що саме ці знання незабаром знадобляться армії США.
20 серпня 1939 року, за 11 днів до початку Другої світової війни, Улям емігрував до США і почав викладати в Університеті Вісконсин-Медісон.
Утім, у 1943 році розмірений ритм життя перекреслив несподіваний лист від знайомого математика. Той просив приїхати до містечка Лос-Аламос у штаті Нью-Мексико.
Так Уляма завербували до надсекретного Мангеттенського проекту, де він займався математичним прогнозуванням сили термоядерної реакції.
Туди його супроводжувала й вагітна дружина Франсуаза, а в доньчиному свідоцтві про народження замість міста вказали «Абонентська скринька 1663».
На той момент американці вже розробляли атомну бомбу, а потім взялися за водневу. Спочатку науковці сподівалися, що після детонації вибухівки вивільниться достатньо енергії, щоб викликати реакцію в термоядерному паливі, але математичні підрахунки це заперечували.
Довгі роки найкращі фізики США безрезультатно шукали рішення, навіть лунали припущення, що водневу бомбу неможливо сконструювати. Аж на початку 1950-х років Улям запропонує розбити детонацію на два ступені.
Про створення термоядерної бомби США розказала програма «Зроблено в Україні» на Каналі 24.
