Оскільки з космосу хмари важко відрізнити від засніженого тла, NASA має переконатися у тому, що супутники правильно вивчають хмари.
Для цього щовесни вона разом із GLOBE Program заохочує громадян проводити 10 спостережень за хмарами на день за допомогою мобільного додатку GLOBE Observer App.

Хмари відіграють важливу роль в енергетичному балансі планети. Якщо вдень переважно хмарно, температура падає впродовж дня. Але якщо ніч хмарна, температура не спадає.
Це пояснюється тим, що протягом дня деякі хмари можуть відбивати короткохвильову сонячну енергію, оскільки мають високу здатність відбивати та розсіювати світло.
Однак вночі певні хмари поглинють та виділяють енергію назад на поверхню. Так утворюється парниковий ефект.
На відміну від нагрівання вищих хмар, низькі хмари сприяють охолодженню Землі.
Оскільки нижчі хмари набагато товщі, вони не настільки прозорі і не пропускають стільки сонячної енергії на поверхню Землі. Замість цього вони відбивають більшу частину цієї енергії назад у космос.
Довгострокові та безперервні спостереження – єдиний спосіб задокументувати та зрозуміти ці тенденції.
Ваші спостереження можуть допомогти перевірити та підтвердити дані космічного експерименту NASA.
Для цього не потрібно бути професіоналом у цих питаннях. Достатньо завантажити додаток і вийти на вулицю.
